(Honolulu)– In an effort to make dining out more enjoyable for Hawaii residents who live with diabetes, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has partnered with Assaggio Ristorante Italiano in Kahala to develop a menu of tasty and healthy items that meet the American Diabetes Association’s dietary guidelines.
A recent survey commissioned by the Hawaii State Department of Health shows that approximately 85,000 Hawaii residents have diabetes. Kaiser Permanente physicians, diabetes educators, and dieticians partnered with Assaggio’s owner and chef, Tomas Ky, to create a “Healthy Options” menu.
“At Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, we’re passionate about supporting the health of our members and Hawaii’s people,” said Dr. Jennifer Loh, Chief of the Department of Endocrinology. “What I love about the ‘Healthy Options’ menu is that it helps to educate everyone on healthy eating and portions.”
The “Healthy Options” menu includes nutritious selections such as Chicken Broccoli Sauté, Jumbo Shrimp Salad, Fresh Fish Mixed Green Salad, and Chicken Bell Pepper Linguini with seasonal vegetables. Each healthy and flavorful meal contains 400 to 570 calories per dish and 60 grams of carbohydrates or less.
“We wanted to create delicious dishes with broad appeal while meeting the dietary restrictions of a large segment of our population,” said Ky. “Guests with diabetes can enjoy healthy meals without compromising flavor at our Kahala restaurant.”
The menu is currently offered exclusively at the Kahala Bistro location, but is slated to roll out in all six Assaggio locations on Oahu.
