(LĪHU‘E) – County officials today announced that the County of Kaua‘i will host town hall meetings as part of its efforts to help prevent underage drinking.
“Underage drinking is a pressing public health concern that affects the health and well-being of our youth, our families and our communities,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “If we can all work together on this issue, I believe that we can begin to bring about change.”
The town hall meetings will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in different locations around the island:
- Thursday, Sept. 22 – Kōloa Neighborhood Center
- Friday, Sept. 23 – Kīlauea Neighborhood Center
- Monday, Sept. 26 – Waimea Neighborhood Center
- Thursday, Sept. 29 – Hale Halewai in Hanalei town
- Friday, Sept. 30 – Līhu‘e Neighborhood Center
Among the topics that will be discussed are assessment, building capacity, data collection, evaluations, implementing interventions and planning.
“We want to educate the public about the impact underage drinking has on our community and invite everyone to join us for this event,” said Theresa Koki, Life’s Choices Kaua’i coordinator. “It is our responsibility to protect our youth from the dangers associated with alcohol abuse and in doing so; we are helping to protect their future.”
The town hall meetings are sponsored by the Hawai‘i Department of Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division through a Partnership for Success grant.
