(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
People can reduce the risk of getting type two diabetes – or work to control the disease if they have it – by watching what they eat and being physically active. And a study indicates the benefit can continue for years. Dr. Judith Fradkin of the National Institutes of Health tells what happened to people at high risk of developing diabetes who participated in an intensive lifestyle changes program in the first few years of the Diabetes Prevention Program.
“Even after 14 years, we saw that that early use of the lifestyle intervention continued to reduce the risk of diabetes.”
Some people still did develop diabetes, but Fradkin says they generally got it later and needed less drug treatment.
The study was presented at an American Diabetes Association meeting.
