(Maui)– – The County of Maui is asking that the public treat our new Maui Bus shelters with care.
Two shelters in Kihei were vandalized last month, causing about $1,000 in damage. The vandalism took place around March 27 and 28 near South Kihei and Uwapo Park, where both makai and mauka side shelters were damaged.
Last year vandals also damaged the bus shelter across from Luana Gardens on two different occasions, first on September 4, 2012 and again on December 31, 2012. Those incidents caused about $400 in damage.
In all cases the damage mostly involved kicking out and/or bending the metal screen walls of the bus shelter. These shelters are brand new and were just dedicated last year.
“These bus shelters are everyone’s property as they are paid for with taxpayer dollars,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “Please treat them with respect so that the community can continue to use them for years to come.”
Those who damage the bus shelters could be prosecuted for Criminal Property Damage which, depending on the amount of damage caused, can range from a petty misdemeanor up to a class C felony. Class C felonies are punishable by up to five years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
