A workout might be a good memory booster. At Georgia Tech in Atlanta, researcher Lisa Weinberg saw signs of this in lab data in young adults.
All looked at pictures. Half then worked out their legs intensely about 20 minutes on weight training equipment. All came back 48 hours later and had to pick out pictures they’d seen earlier from a group in which half the pictures were new. People who worked out did about 10 percent better at remembering the pictures.
Weinberg says the approach might benefit people who are older or physically challenged.
“Something that’s nice about this resistance task is that it’s very accessible to people with different physical abilities.”
The study in the journal Acta Physiologica was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
