(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
A study indicates more Americans are being physically active – in some places. At the University of Washington, Dr. Christopher Murray’s look at national data on counties from 2001 to 2011 found an increase in adults who did moderate activity 150 minutes a week, or vigorous activity 75 minutes.
“It is possible to raise levels of physical activity and it’s very important at this point to try to learn lessons from those success stories.”
But before we celebrate with cake and ice cream, Murray says obesity went up just about everywhere – so, over the general population, increased activity just kept a bad thing from being worse.
The study in the journal Population Health Metrics was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
