(LĪHU‘E) – On Thursday, Nov. 9, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami will proclaim the month of November as Homelessness Awareness Month, in an effort to educate the public, bring awareness to the problem of poverty, and support volunteers engaged in the community.
“Addressing hunger and homelessness is a community effort,” said Mayor Kawakami. “We express our gratitude to our Housing Agency, Kaua‘i Community Alliance (KCA), Kaua‘i County Council, and all partners in the continuum of care who work tirelessly to serve our community. They search for solutions, seek funding support, develop housing opportunities, and provide critical services with compassion and aloha for our people. We appreciate their efforts in making a positive impact on our community.”
In observance of Homelessness Awareness Month, KCA is hosting the fifth annual Kaua‘i Housing Connect homeless outreach event at the following locations:
- Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Līhu‘e Salvation Army, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.;
- Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Hanapēpē Salvation Army, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and
- Thursday, Nov. 9, at All Saints Church in Kapa‘a, from noon to 3 p.m.
Upward of 14 non-profit agencies will provide various services, including flu, COVID and pneumonia vaccinations, wound care, primary care, family planning, vital documents, Narcan training, smoking cessation, Med-Quest sign-ups, hot showers, and housing voucher sign-ups.
“This year’s Kaua‘i Housing Connect event provides a great opportunity for everyone to make a difference, no matter how small or large their contribution,” said Housing Director Adam Roversi. “Our Housing Agency staff is proud to partner with the Kaua‘i Community Alliance to conduct outreach across the island, connecting people with programs and services.”
