(HONOLULU) — Satellite city halls across Oʻahu are now allowing residents to pay their property taxes with a major credit card as part of broader effort to eventually go cashless.
This new payment option is available for the City and County of Honolulu property tax bills that residents will receive in the mail beginning January 20 and involves the 2.35% processing fee assessed by financial institutions when using a credit card, as required for all other city payments made via credit card.
Satellite city halls also accept checks and cash, which are the only property-tax payment types that don’t come with a fee; however, the January property tax bill will be the last cycle for which satellite city halls accept cash as a form of payment for property taxes. Last year, 13% of property tax payments were made in cash by a total of 2,305 residents. Checks accounted for the other 87% of payments from 15,101 residents.
Starting July 2026, a credit card or check will be the only two payment methods for property taxes accepted at satellite city halls. The Treasury Cashier’s Office on the ground floor of Honolulu Hale will continue to accept cash payments for real property taxes.
“We are transitioning to entirely cashless payment options for property taxes as part of our commitment to modernizing our services, enhancing security, and reducing wait times,” said Department of Customer Services Director Kim Hashiro, who oversees satellite city halls and driver licensing centers across Oʻahu.
No appointment is needed for a property-tax payment at a satellite city hall, where there’s a dedicated line for quick, routine transactions like paying a property-tax bill. For more information, go to honolulu.gov/csd.
