(LÎHU’E) – Over 300 students from across the island participated in the county’s “Kaua‘i Kakou: I Love My Community” art contest, which was part of the public outreach process in the General Plan update.
Entries were submitted by a number of elementary schools including: Hanalei; Kîlauea; Kapa‘a; King Kaumuali’i; Wilcox; Kôloa; Kalâheo; ‘Ele‘ele and Kekaha elementary schools; along with St. Catherine School; Island School and Kanuikapono Charter School.
Marisa Valenciano, a long-range county planner who coordinated the contest, expressed her delight with the participation.
“The children’s artwork are wonderful expressions of how they feel about the communities they live in,” said Valenciano. “It was especially fun for us to see what their ideas are for the future of our island, and we plan to use the artwork as part of the feedback for the General Plan update.”
She noted that the winning entries will be included in the actual General Plan update as well as on the project website, http://plankauai.com/.
The grand prize winner Zixin He, a fourth grade student at Kapa‘a Elementary School, was presented her award by Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. at the recent Mayor-a-thon. Her prize package included a certificate and a bicycle donated by Kaua‘i Path.
Aljhay Flores, a fourth grade student at King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School and first runner up, was also recognized at the Mayor-a-thon with a certificate.
The other winners included Aaliyah Cadiente-Numazawa, second runner up, Wilcox Elementary School, fourth grade, and Sisilia Koli, honorable mention, Kîlauea Elementary School, first grade.
