(Honolulu) – For Pali Momi Medical Center (PMMC), May 20, 2014, is a date that represents 875 days of commitment to the health and well-being of the people of Central and West O’ahu. That’s how long its been since the closure of Hawai‘i Medical Center (HMC) West in 2011. In that time, our physicians and employees have played a vital role in meeting increased volumes while continuing the hospital’s high quality of care.
To bring that uninterrupted care to the community, PMMC made physical changes to its facility, added staff and created programs to allow for more service. Today, the hospital’s leadership held multiple events to personally thank the staff for rising to the challenge.
PMMC CEO Jen H. Chahanovich applauded her staff for the achievement. “Pali Momi helped fill the void by expanding services in any way it was necessary to positively impact the needs of our community. Everyone who works here contributed, and I can’t say enough about our personal commitment to put patients first,” said Chahanovich.
Some of the changes during the past 875-day period include:
- Converting the physician dining room and physician lounge areas into additional treatment rooms to accommodate more Emergency Department patients.
- Adding 10 more beds to the hospital, totaling 126 beds.
- Building a Transitional Care Unit (TCU) to open up more bed space. The TCU has 10 fully equipped bays that are used for observation and to discharge patients.
- Introducing a greeter program in the Emergency Department to provide constant checks on patients.
- Implemented free valet parking for all Emergency Department patients.
During today’s recognition festivities, PMMC provided meals to the entire staff. PMMC now has 1,200 employees and 400 physicians on staff. Banners reading ‘Our Community Thanks You, Pali Momi’ were placed around campus quoting letters from grateful patients. In an effort to have the patients’ voices heard, these mahalo messages were shared to remind the staff of their impact during this challenging time. Lastly, the leadership team visited every department to personally thank them for their great work.
“I spent four nights in Pali Momi and would like to compliment your staff for the excellent care and professional service during my stay. From the emergency room to the isolation room, the quality and professionalism of care was outstanding. They treated me as a human being with warmth and concern,” said an Emergency Department and Hospital patient from West O‘ahu.
PMMC will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in July.
