(Oahu)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Nicholas Garlow with HHS HealthBeat.
Your pet is part of your family. Being prepared for disasters means having a plan. Your pet’s needs should be included in that plan. Have a go bag for your pet with a water bowl, food, bags to clean up after them, and any medications they need. And be ready to evacuate.
Dr. Ty Vannieuwenhoven is the chief veterinary officer for the National Disaster Medical System.
“Evacuation can be scary for a pet, so be sure to have them leashed, crated, or in a carrier, and make sure to have their vet records with them.”
Sometimes people and pets get separated during a disaster. Have a picture of them in case that happens.
“It’s much easier to find your pets if they have appropriate ID on their collars, and even better, if they’re microchipped. It’s pretty inexpensive and not painful.”
