(Honolulu) – The Queen’s Medical Center – West O‘ahu has received a $3 million grant from The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation that will help meet the increasing need for quality health care in the community of West O‘ahu.
Since the hospital opened on May 20, the numbers show just how tremendous the demand was. In the first seven days, there were 940 visits to the emergency room and 126 inpatient admissions.
“The Weinberg Foundation’s generous gift is making it possible for Queen’s to grow and continue to impact and improve the lives of the people of West O‘ahu,” said Art Ushijima, president and CEO of The Queen’s Health Systems. “We are already making plans for expansion and hiring more people – providing jobs to those who live in the community. This would not be possible without the immeasurable support of our sponsors such as The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.”
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation is one of the largest private charitable foundations in the United States, and is dedicated to meeting the needs of the underserved.
“The needs are definitely in West O‘ahu,” said Eric Yeaman, chairman of the Board of Trustees for The Queen’s Health Systems. “We’ve experienced it in just the first few weeks. We are continuing to take steps to support West O‘ahu’s tremendous growth and fulfill the mission of our founders, Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV.” That mission is to provide quality health care services for Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawai‘i.
In 1859, the King and Queen counted on the community’s support, and personally went door-to-door to raise the funds for the hospital that is The Queen’s Medical Center today. One hundred fifty-five years later, Queen’s continues to be touched by the community’s outstanding support. “The $3 million grant from The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation is helping us bring a new level of healthcare to West O‘ahu,” said Ushijima. “We can continue to grow, adapt, and reach more people and save more lives.”
