(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
One of the problems researchers see in teen use of marijuana is that many teens don’t see marijuana use as a problem. The Monitoring the Future survey of eighth-, 10th- and 12th-graders says 60 percent of 12th graders don’t see regular marijuana use as harmful.
The percentage of teens that see the great risk has been falling for 10 years. And the percentage of teens using marijuana has been rising; 65 percent of high school seniors say they smoke marijuana daily. Dr. Nora Volkow, the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which supports the survey:
“When you have 6.5 percent of kids that are in 12th grade taking marijuana regularly, you actually start to get concerned vis-à-vis how that ultimately will affect how their brain works.”
