(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
Using tobacco can be fatal, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 1 in 5 American adults uses tobacco. The CDC’s numbers for 2012 to 2013 work out to about 50 million people.
At the CDC, Dr. Brian King tells what they could be in for:
“All forms of cancer are addictive, and cause cancer and other serious health effects. Smoking alone has been shown to cause 14 forms of cancer, including lung, throat and liver cancer.”
King says smoking also causes heart attacks and strokes, as well as diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.
King says smokeless tobacco causes oral cancer.
An article on tobacco use is in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
