(Kapolei) – This summer, UH West O‘ahu will offer its second annual Summer Music Works song-writing program for high school juniors and seniors in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i’s Wai‘anae Clubhouse and Hawai‘i P-20 Partnerships for Education. Summer Music Works will break down the basics of music and help students write and record their next music hit in pop, rap or instrumental.
The program is open to Nānākuli, Wai‘anae, Ānuenue, Farrington or Waipahu High School students entering 11th or 12th grade this fall. All participants will earn three college credits as well as high school credits for the five-week program happening May 28 – June 29. Tuition is free with a one dollar annual membership fee donation to the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i.
As part of Summer Music Works, students will also learn about higher education programs at the University of Hawai‘i System and how to be successful college students. Summer Music Works is spearheaded by UH West O‘ahu Assistant Professor of Music Jon Magnussen, and includes special workshop sessions with guest artists from the local music industry.
“This is a great opportunity for musically-inclined students to get a preview of college while they’re still in high school. Tuition is free, thanks to our partners at Hawai‘i P-20 Partnerships for Education and the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i’s Wai‘anae Clubhouse,” said Magnussen. “Because music shares strong connections with mathematics and language, it can also be a powerful tool to help reinforce those life skills. This year we are especially proud to hold our Summer Music Works classes on our new Kapōlei campus. Students will be able to experience firsthand what it feels like to go to class on a real college campus.”
Summer Music Works aims to improve the quality of life of our citizens by providing an awareness of skills helpful for success in college and in life, supporting the growth of new musical talent at the pre-college level through music creation, and providing an awareness of potential career paths in music.
Interested students should contact their Nānākuli, Wai‘anae, Ānuenue, Farrington or Waipahu High School college counselor to enroll in UH West O‘ahu’s Summer Music Works through the Running Start Program. No audition or portfolio required. The application deadline is April 26, 2013. For specific program information and how to apply, visithttp://www.uhwo.Hawaiʻi.edu/musicworks.
