(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
A nationwide survey finds teens are smoking less, but there’s a lot of vaping – use of e-cigarettes, which carry nicotine on heated vapor.
The 2014 Monitoring the Future report says daily cigarette use is continuing its slide down. But the latest survey has the annual report’s first look at e-cigarettes. The survey is supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The institute’s deputy director, Dr. Wilson Compton:
“We were quite surprised to see that a large number of youth are not only using these, but even among youth that have not previously smoked cigarettes, there’s a significant number using e-cigarettes.”
The report says about 9 percent of eighth graders, 16 percent of 10th graders and 17 percent of 12th graders had used e-cigarettes in the past month.
