Vitamin D is good for bones, and there are indications it can help women reduce the risk of fibroids, which are painful and can cause bleeding in the uterus. Researcher Donna Baird of the National Institutes of Health saw that in data on about 1,000 women in the Washington, D.C., area from 1996 to 1999.
“Those with sufficient vitamin D were less likely to have fibroids – about 30 percent less likely. The more vitamin D, the less likely women were to have fibroids.”
The body can make vitamin D when the skin gets sunlight, and people also can get the vitamin directly in supplements or some foods, such as salmon or vitamin-fortified milk.
The study is in the journal Epidemiology.
