(Kaua’i) – Department of Water (DOW) officials announced the completion of a $1.7 million capital replacement project for the Wailua-Kapa‘a water system by its contractor Koga Engineering and Construction Inc.
“This pipeline replacement project provides necessary the upgrades with regards to our system’s pressure zone isolation, fire protection and the reduction of pipeline frictional losses, which increases energy efficiency,” said Dustin Moises, DOW’s construction project management officer.
The project involved a number of improvements including the installation of approximately 3,272 linear feet of 8-inch ductile iron pipe on Olohena Road and 1,869 linear feet of 6-inch ductile iron pipe on Waipouli Road. Other installations included new pressure reducing valves, fire hydrants, service laterals, meter boxes and drainage facilities.
The project also tackled an on-going groundwater seepage problem along Olohena Road, which occurred prior to the construction of the DOW’s waterline. The DOW and its contractor, Koga Engineering and Construction Inc., assisted the Department of Public Works (DPW) to address this issue.
“I’d like to thank the Department of Public Works Road Division’s Scott Suga and his staff for their involvement in effectively dealing with the site conditions we encountered during construction,” Moises said. “It was important to work collaboratively with our County family to efficiently mitigate the road drainage issues. I’m glad we all could work together in a timely and cost-effective manner.”
The Waipouli and Olohena waterline improvements are part of Water Plan 2020, a comprehensive long-range plan to replace or repair aging infrastructure so customers can continue to be provided with safe and affordable water.
The DOW would like to thank residents in the area for their patience and cooperation while the work was underway.
