(Kauai)–Kaua’i’s Deputy Chief of Police Michael M. Contrades recently returned home after graduating from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy on March 16 in Quantico, Virginia.
Deputy Chief Contrades was also presented with the “Excellence in Leadership” award, a peer nominated honor.
Contrades was one of 257 participants of the 248th session of the academy, a rigorous ten-week professional course of study for both national and international law enforcement leaders.
Created in 1935, the FBI National Academy serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments at home and abroad, and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge and cooperation worldwide.
According to the FBI, it is an opportunity afforded to less than one percent of law enforcement officers worldwide.
“KPD is very proud of Deputy Chief Contrades’ accomplishments in representing the County of Kaua’i. Our community will benefit from his newly acquired skills,” said Kaua’i Police Chief Darryl Perry. “I would also like to commend and acknowledge his parents for raising such an outstanding son, and to his family for sacrificing and supporting the Deputy during his time away from home.”
Deputy Chief Contrades earned a total of 18 college credits for courses relating to leadership, legal issues, crime analysis, youth violence, criminal justice research, stress management and fitness.
In addition to his academic studies, Deputy Chief Contrades participated and completed all of the optional physical challenges. The Yellow Brick Road challenge culminates in a grueling 6.1 mile run through a Marine Corps obstacle course known as the Yellow Brick Road. The Blue Brick challenge is a cumulative 34-mile swim, which Contrades completed by his eighth week at the academy.
For his efforts, Contrades was awarded the traditional yellow and blue bricks to memorialize his achievement.
“I am fortunate to have been a part of such a prestigious organization and I am grateful for the opportunity,” says Deputy Chief Contrades. “I look forward to applying all that I have learned to help move our department forward and make our community a better place.”
Deputy Chief Contrades is a 17-year veteran of the department and has served in many different capacities. He was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police by Kaua’i Police Chief Darryl D. Perry in December of 2011.
