(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
Some kids seem to do what they should for health and some seem to do the opposite. The trends were seen in survey data from 39 states on almost 10,000 kids ages 11 to 16.
At the National Institutes of Health, Ronald Iannotti says about a quarter were above average in physical activity and eating fruits and vegetables, and below average on being sedentary and snacking. About another quarter were like the mirror image:
“They’re low in physical activity, high in sedentary behavior, high in snack consumption and not eating a lot of fruits and vegetables.”
A third group was the largest – about half – and it also did less than what it should.
The study in the Journal of Adolescent Health was supported by the NIH and HHS’s Health Resources and Services Administration.
