(LĪHU‘E) – In recognition of April as being Fair Housing Month, the county is sponsoring free training on the Fair Housing Law on Tuesday, April 28.
“We provide this training every year to keep everyone apprised of the Fair Housing Law,” said Kaua‘i County Housing Director Kamuela Cobb-Adams.
There will be two sessions held at the Līhu‘e Civic Center, Pi‘ikoi Building, rooms A and B.
The first one is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and is geared toward property and resident managers, housing agents, homeowners’ association board members, landlords, as well as security and police officers.
The afternoon session will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., and is intended for tenants, Section 8 clients and the public.
Featured speakers include representatives from the Hawai‘i Civil Rights Commission, Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The morning session will cover the following topics:
- Accommodating residents with severe allergies and tenting for termites.
- Americans with Disabilities Act and Fair Housing Act.
- Assistance animals relative to reasonable accommodations in housing.
- Educating maintenance staff about accommodation and modification requirements.
- HUD’s adoption of the Keating Memo relative to occupancy standards.
- Reasonable modifications.
- Tenant selection.
The focus of the afternoon session will be on:
- Civil rights and wrongs.
- Definition of a disability as defined by the Supreme Court.
- Fair Housing Act relative to recovering alcoholics.
- Joint statement by HUD and the U.S. Department of Justice on reasonable accommodations under the Fair Housing Act.
- Keating Memo as it applies to occupancy standards.
