(Oahu)– UH Mānoa’s 19,000 students are being invited to explain in 15-second video shorts how they uniquely answer the question, “How do you make Mānoa yours?” – with the grand prize winner of the “Make Mānoa Yours” social media contest to receive a $1,000 UHM scholarship.
Contest begins Monday, January 11, 2016. Students should send video shorts to MyUHM@hawaii.edu or tag #MakeManoaYours. Deadline to enter is 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2016. Participation is limited to UHM students currently enrolled in the Spring 2016 semester.
The video shorts may transcend the traditional classroom setting at the 320-acre UHM campus, explained Jennel Sesoko, Office of Admissions relations manager. “It great to be a Rainbow Warrior,” said Sesoko. “Our campus, our student body, and our unique location set us apart from the rest. Why not hear, see and experience this from our most authentic source – the student?
“Student experiences can involve dawn patrol at Diamond Head, weekend trips to the neighbor islands, or a community workday in the lo‘i at the Hawai‘inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge,” she continued. “It can be a zombie flashmob or Star Wars night at a game at the Stan Sheriff Center. It can involve making lifelong friends at the Hale Aloha Towers. It’s adding stamps to your passport on Study Abroad. It’s simply enjoying all that the university and Hawaiʻi have to offer.”
The contest is led by the UHM Admissions Office, with support from the Office of the Chancellor, UH Productions, Ka Leo, KTUH, Financial Aid, UH Bookstore and UH Foundation. Community partners include Outrigger Hotels and Resorts, and Art & Flea.
Said Director of Student Media Sandy Matsui, “College media should be interactive, timely, visually appealing, and must be delivered in a matter of seconds, not minutes. This is why working with the Office of Admissions on the ‘Make Mānoa Yours’ campaign is a perfect collaboration for our UH Manoa Student Media, where our student-run organizations can work their talents together to produce a valuable message from a student perspective.” UH Manoa Student Media includes the student-run video and film production unit known as UH Productions, as well as Ka Leo news organization and KTUH radio station.
Said UH Productions General Manager Tony Mejia, a UH Manoa sophomore majoring Computer Science, “UHP looks for new ways to connect with our university and the community. The ‘Make Manoa Yours’ campaign affords us the opportunity to do so and, ultimately, to share an authentic vision of what it means to be a student at our campus.”
Added Sesoko, “We are involving our very own Rainbow Warrior students to be the stars of this campaign – from the front-end experience, to behind-the-scenes. We are excited to work with our students and thankful of the support from our on- and off-campus campaign supporters.”
In addition to the “Make Mānoa Yours” grand prize of a $1,000 UHM scholarship, other top submissions are eligible to win prizes including a one-night stay at a Waikīkī Outrigger Hotel, concert tickets, and UH Bookstore gift certificates. All winning clips will be featured in a new UHM Admissions brand campaign.
