(HONOLULU)– Kaiser Permanente today announced the launch of teledermatology, a virtual service allowing dermatologists to view images of suspicious moles, lesions and rashes via Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect®, their leading edge electronic medical record system. “Tele-derm” started as a pilot project on Maui and the Big Island and is now available to all Kaiser Permanente patients to improve access to specialists, speed the diagnostic process and improve clinical outcomes.
Through the service, dermatologists review photos sent via secure email server from primary care physicians and determine whether a face-to-face appointment is necessary to further diagnose or treat the condition. The triage process is convenient for patients who do not need to be referred for further care, and leaves more time for specialists to treat patients whose skin problems warrant an in-person visit.
“Teledermatology helps us get a quick answer about a benign mole or simple rash, and alleviates unnecessary worry and stress for our patients,” said Dr. Theresa Devere, chief of dermatology at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “On the other hand, if a patient has a more concerning condition, teledermatology can also expedite a diagnosis, so treatment can begin sooner. In cases such as melanoma, early diagnosis and timely treatment are critical and can save lives.”
