(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
A study indicates many Americans have a bittersweet relationship with sugar-sweetened drinks. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Sohyun Park looked at survey data on about 3,900 adults.
“About 8 out of 10 adults agreed that drinking sugar-sweetened beverage can contribute to weight gain. However, 8 out of 10 adults also did not know the calorie content of a 24-ounce fountain soda.”
The answer: from 251 to 350 calories.
Those who got the calorie count about right didn’t drink any less. Nearly 1 of 3 adults reported drinking at least one sugar-sweetened beverage a day.
The study was for publication in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
