(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
We do like our sodas – as well as fruit drinks and similar sugar-sweetened stuff. And it’s not just kids. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reviewed survey data for 18 states in 2012. They found that about 1 in 4 adults had a sugar-sweetened drink at least once a day. People ages 18 to 34 were the most common fans – twice as likely as people ages 55 and older.
But CDC researcher Sohyun Park says there can be a bitter aftertaste to that sweet drink:
“It has been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, and dental caries.”
She says plain water is healthier.
The study is in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
