(Kauai)– The Department of Water (DOW) has scheduled a water outage in the Hâ’ena-Wainiha area from 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 21 to 4 a.m. the next morning. The outage will allow the department’s contractor Unlimited Builders, LLC to isolate the system and do much needed rehabilitation work to the existing 100,000 gallon Hâ’ena tank and the Wainiha booster pump station.
This project is part of Water Plan 2020, DOW’s comprehensive long range plan to replace or repair aging infrastructure so customers can continue to be provided with safe and affordable water.
During the outage, customers in the Hâ’ena-Wainiha area will either experience no water or low water pressure.
The areas that will have no water service are all of Hâ’ena and parts of Wainiha, including customers along Kûhi‘ô Highway from the Wainiha Powerhouse Road intersection to the Ananalu Road intersection, as well as those along Ananalu Road.
All other areas in Wainiha will experience low water pressure including those along Wainiha Powerhouse, Ala‘eke, and Anahulu roads.
A detailed map of all the affected streets can be viewed online at www.kauaiwater.org.
Affected customers are advised to take the following steps:
- Store enough water to meet their needs during the outage.
- Notify family, friends, and neighbors that may be affected by the outage.
- Those with faulty water heaters should ensure that their water heaters do not empty during the outage.
- Exercise caution while driving through the area.
DOW will provide portable water tanks at Hâ’ena Beach Park and along Ananalu Road for customers that run out of water during the shutdown. Customers will need to bring their own water containers.
When the water main is turned back on after the connection is done, it is possible that air will be mixed with the water. If this happens, the water will appear white or milky in color. The air in the water will dissipate after a while and should not be cause for alarm.
The Department of Water apologizes for the inconvenience and thanks affected customers for their patience and cooperation in preparing for the water outage.
Affected customers that have listed phone number or have registered for the county’s Blackboard Connect CTY notification service will be contacted through Connect CTY about the outage.
Those who have not yet signed up for the free notification service and would like to do so should log onto the county website, www.kauai.gov, or call the Kaua’i Civil Defense Agency at 241-1800.
