(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
There’s more to healthy eating than fruits and vegetables. At Emory University in Atlanta, researchers looked at what a group of women in southwest Georgia had in their homes.
The women had an average of 14 types of fruits and vegetables. But they were all overweight or obese. So the researchers think high-fat snacks, sugary drinks and frying foods were working against the healthy stuff.
Researcher Michelle Kegler:
“Fewer snacks and more fruits and vegetables at home might help people to improve their diets. The findings also suggest that the more frequently you shop for fruits and vegetables, the more likely you are to eat fruits and vegetables, and so that might be another strategy.”
The study in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior was supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
